Why Saving Water is Important
The idea of saving water may seem crazy, we have a whole ocean which carries approximately 96.5% of the earth’s water, so why would we ever run out? Well, did you know less than 1% of the earth’s total water is readily accessible for human use? So ensuring we put our best effort to conserve it, and don’t waste it, is extremely important.
Here at Control Flow Technologies Group, it is our biggest mission to save water and protect our planet! Our water saving devices allow us to save approximately 84 litres of water per household per day—that’s 30,660 litres per year for one household, and it’s completely FREE!
Is the UK having a water crisis?
The UK is facing the need for additional water to meet increasing demand. The average daily water use per person in 2024-2025 was 136.5 litres of water per day; that’s almost double than what people were using 60 years ago, estimating that by 2050, England will face a 5 billion litre gap between the water available and the water needed. This water isn’t going to appear out of nowhere. There is a 1 in 4 chance over the next 30 years that households and businesses will experience water supply cuts, potentially leading to an economic impact of between £25 billion and £40 billion, highlighting the importance of acting now!
Why water is important and Why we should save it
We use water for more things than you may realise. Did you know that it takes 14,000 litres of water to make one smartphone? In fact, you are able to read this on your device due to data centres, which use water to cool their servers. After watching this Ted Talk, I’ll bet you didn’t realise just how much water you were using. However, if we run out of water, we would be facing bigger problems than just not being able to use our phone.
If current levels of water use continue, England could face a public water shortfall of five billion litres a day by 2055 unless urgent action is taken. While that may seem like a distant problem, 2055 is only 30 years away, close enough that the consequences are likely to affect you, your children, or other members of your family.
The ocean is home to over 240,000 known species, with millions more undiscovered. As little as 1 litre of water could be home to 38,000 species, so protecting the ocean is protecting thousands of species.
Not only is the ocean home to many, it provides half of the earth’s oxygen helping us survive. Additionally, it absorbs over a quarter of human-induced carbon emissions, and absorbs heat, meaning the increasing threat of global warming has been reduced due to the ocean.
So why save water? We firstly need to ensure we have enough water to meet our ever growing demand, and make sure we don’t face water shortages as high as five billion litres.
Secondly, saving water means protecting the environment, not only for ourselves, but for all of the wildlife. Currently, 10% of wetland species are faced with extinction.
Thirdly, you will save money. Saving water means you will be paying less on your utility bills, and who doesn’t want that?
This is a human problem that needs a human solution, and Control Flow Technologies Group is here to help you do that.
How to save water
Saving water does not have to be difficult. There are so many easy ways to help you save water that are also super effective over time. Every little thing makes a huge difference!
- Check for leaks. Did you know a dripping tap can waste over 5,000 litres per year? That’s enough to fill 60 bathtubs!
- Avoid pre-rinsing dishes. Instead of rinsing dishes before you put them in the dishwasher, scrape the food in the bin.
- Fill your washing machine the right amount. Many washing machines are used for loads smaller than their maximum capacity. Fill your washing machine to its recommended load size for the most efficient use of water.
- Opt for a low flow shower head. Low flow shower heads use around 6 litres per minute, in comparison to a standard shower head which uses 10-15 litres per minute. Over a 10 minute shower, you will save up to 90 litres of water!
- Wash your vegetables in a bowl. Washing your vegetables in a bowl rather than running them under your tap saves a huge amount of water! You can then reuse that water to water your plants!
- Use cold water on laundry. By using a full load of laundry with cold water, this can reduce water heating costs and energy consumption.
- Buy second hand clothes. Did you know a pair of jeans and a t-shirt uses around 13,570 litres of water!
- Keep drinking water in the fridge. Keep a bottle or jug of drinking water in the fridge so you always have cold water ready to drink, without wasting water waiting for the tap to run cold.
- Shorten your showers. If everyone in England knocked 1 minute off their shower time we could save almost 1 billion litres of water!
- Turn off your tap whilst brushing your teeth. So much water can be saved in your home by turning off the tap whilst brushing your teeth, as this avoids water wastage.
